Our NEXT CHAPTER - à la carte

2024 brought exciting changes to our restaurant. We stayed open year-round from February, introduced lunches, and ventured into offering a more flexible menu.

Change can be daunting, but it’s also invigorating.

In 2025, we’re taking the next step in our journey. For the first time, we’re offering a full à la carte menu, showcasing the very best of the farm each day while giving you an exciting range of options. Whether you’re stopping by for a few bar snacks by the fire or settling in for a full evening feast, we can’t wait to welcome you.

Feasting sessions

Our signature communal dining experience which we’ve refined over the past six years is not over though. The joy and connection of convivial dining remain at the heart of what we do. That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce our Seasonal Feasting Sessions—limited-seating experience featuring a curated six-course menu celebrating the very best of the season. These special evenings will take place one weekend each season, starting with our Spring Feasting Session on 21st and 22nd March.

About the restaurant

  • We offer a seasonal à la carte menu that evolves daily based on what’s fresh and available from the farm.

    While we’re unable to provide exact menus in advance, we’re happy to accommodate all dietary requirements. Please let us know about any preferences or restrictions when making your reservation.

  • Our restaurant reopens on 7th February!

    Opening Hours:

    • Friday: 17:00 – Last sitting at 20:45

    • Saturday: 12:00 – 15:00, 17:00 – Last sitting at 20:45

    • Sunday: 12:00 – Last sitting at 18:00

    Reservations are recommended, but walk-ins are always welcome.

    Please note that we occasionally host private events throughout the year. To avoid disappointment, call or WhatsApp us at 07350 396948 to confirm we’re open before walking in.

  • We operate a licensed bar that accepts both card and cash payments. Our carefully curated menu is designed to complement our food perfectly. We exclusively offer a selection of natural and organic wines, local beers, seasonal cocktails, and non-alcoholic drinks.

    Please note that BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle) is not permitted.

  • We are located just outside Balerno, with easy access from the City of Edinburgh. Click here to view our location on Google Maps.

    TAXIS & UBER

    Please note that while you may be able to get an Uber here, they do not operate pickups this far out. We have a great relationship with Edinburgh City Cabs and recommend using their services instead. You can pre-book online, via their app, or by phone.

    BUS & SHUTTLE SERVICE

    From the centre of Edinburgh, the number 44 Lothian Bus to Balerno is your best option (route map here; select 44 from the dropdown on the left).

    For our dinner services, we offer a free Land Rover shuttle service to and from the Crosswood Crescent bus stop (location here). The shuttle will bring you to the farm and return you at the end of the evening. The first pickup from Crosswood Crescent is around 18:45, and we aim to have all guests at the venue by 19:30.

    Unfortunately, we are currently unable to offer the shuttle service during our lunch services. From the Crosswood Crescent bus stop, we are a 25-minute walk along a quiet road.

  • For bookings of more than eight people, please email restaurant@the-free-company.com

  • If the date or time you prefer is fully booked, you can sign up for the waitlist on our booking page. If a table becomes available, you will receive a notification confirming your booking.

  • Due to our rural location, it is challenging for us to fill tables that are canceled at short notice. Therefore, cancellations or no-shows within 48 hours of your booking will incur a £25 charge per person.

    We will hold your table for 15 minutes past your reservation time. After this period, the table will be considered a no-show. As we have multiple sittings per table, we cannot guarantee an extension of your reservation if you arrive late.
